Overview: The fourth of July is here and the fishing is turning out to be typical Jersey fishing. The bigger bass have left the building! Reports to the north are suggesting most of the cows have gone to New York and CT while the schoolies and shorts are barely picking clams down here. Fluke fishing is starting to pick up as kayakers and party boats alike are pulling in flatties to 7 pounds. Weakfish action is also turning around but only at night on pink and white Fin-S. Offshore is the place to be if you’re looking for a shark steak for the grill. Makos and threshers are abundant but gas prices are keeping most boats at the dock.

Atlantic Highlands: Bass fishing has been unreliable for a majority of the week. Bunker schools are starting to thin out near the Rocks, but the blues and bass just are not there. Head north for any kind of big bass bite; places like the Reach are providing both bass and fluke keepers. Fluke fishing in False Hook Bay is one of the better places for the week. Reports of a good keeper ratio in shallow water have lured the kayaks out of retirement. Fluke mines, bucktails and double bait rigs are the most productive choices in the river and just outside the bay. Offshore mako action is the tops with mile long chum lines being optimum for drawing shortfins up from 100 feet plus.
