Overview: You can almost map out the fishing from north to south for New Jersey. The further north you go, the less fluke you will catch but the cows are definitely there. The opposite goes for south Jersey where Doormat Fest 08 is in full swing but most anglers can’t buy a bass. As many Garden State anglers know this is typical summertime fishing. The offshore action is taking it to a whole new level with tuna and sharks of all shapes and sizes in the canyons. It is safe to say the fishing is on fire in North Jersey.
Keyport: The bay is off the hook this week as the remnants of the bass and bluefish schools take to the Raritan. The end of the Hook is especially hot with bass to 40 pounds being the high hooks from the boats. Bluefish are hitting metals “with a vengeance” as one shop-keep reported; its one fish after another. Fluke fishing is all about the shorts with many boats in the bay focusing on the bass and bluefish. Off Sandy Hook the fishing continues to sizzle with big cows mooing across the New Jersey and New York lines. Getting them to stay in one spot is proving to be hard as the bunker schools are fleeing from the area. The Triangle is holding a vast amount of fluke but keepers are slim pick’ens so be ready. The Channel is also producing a good bite but the boat activity turns the action on and off within minutes.
South Amboy: Striper action in this region has taken a great turn for the better as the morning trollers are devastating bass at The Rip. Sea Bright Jetties are also hot from land with bass hitting the night time eel feast. Cocktail blues are ripe for the picking as 3 to 5-pounders are chasing peanut bunker into the rivers. Speaking of the river, fluke anglers are taking baby doormats in the Navesink on bucktails and the new Lucanas system from Shimano. Gulps are also doing some damage in the shallows. A nice report for the Shrewsbury Rocks indicates sea bass and ling are getting bigger and taking clams and squid regularly. Union Beach and the Ambrose Channel are the two Hot Spots for fluke this week.
