Overview: Be on the lookout for runaway anglers this week with many people deciding to hit the beach instead of clocking in at work. The fall run has officially kicked off with a bang and many anglers are anticipating a tremendous fall. The mullet run is also underway with a ton of bluefish attacking the suds.
One shop reported blitzes so good that adult menhaden schools were being pushed onto shore past the wet sand line. It’s been chaos in places like Island Beach but the dreaded R word has spoiled most of the fun. A weekend washout is what the weatherman forecasts but a little bit of sun may be in store for Sunday.
Manasquan: Large schools of bunker have been worked off of Lavallette and Manasquan Beach in the past day or so. The Point Pleasant Canal is by far the best place to fish, hands down. Blackfish are responding well to green crabs and clams, but sea bass are hitting squid more often then clams. Hi- Lo rigs are the pick of the tackle box for porgy and sea bass. Size 2/0 hooks are landing most of the fish but many anglers are using a 1/0 with a small amount of bait. The Mantoloking Bridge is packed to the gills with medium sized weakfish and small porgies. Use a small white bucktail on a morning slack tide to catch the tricky bait stealers.
