Most anglers in North Jersey are just starting to realize the fluke season is closed. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but the sea bass fishery is still open despite an emergency meeting this past week. It’s not much of a conciliation prize with no big bass schools around until the water temps drops severely. Big bluefish schools are starting to come back closer to shore. Be on the lookout for small schools of false albies and bonito, which are coming within a few miles of the surf. Larger weakfish are also starting to tip the scales in most bait shops so it’s not all bad!

Keyport: Chapel Hill Channel was really starting to pick up with fluke action, but now it’s a done deal. Sea robins are starting to trickle into the bay so beware your bottom rigs. Most inshore action has been limited to fluke fishing, but look for cooler water to bring in a few keeper bass. Small bass were reported off of Cliffwood Beach, but nothing to start the fall run. Larger weakfish are moving into the area and are taking baits on the end of white and green bucktails.
